Estuary has its roots in intelligent virtual agent research. We began as a research framework for building multimodal, low-latency, socially interactive agents with several peer-reviewed publications at ACM IVA 2024, and a CHI 2025 case study with leading AI agent researchers that shaped what we are today. Now, as Estuary, we power the backend infrastructure behind AI characters on the web, in game engines, smartglasses, and even inside physical toys.
